Voices Rise: A Baltimore Choir of Hope

"One of the most impressive examples I've come across of musicians helping people in need is Voices Rise: A Baltimore Choir of Hope..."
    - Tim Smith, The Baltimore Sun

Voices Rise was founded in February 2017 by brothers Douglas and Benjamin Buchanan. It is a joint outreach effort between St. David's Episcopal Church, Paul's Place Outreach, Inc., and the Peabody Conservatory. A community choir inviting all people to sing, it is founded on the model of a street choir, meaning that it is particularly welcoming to individuals experiencing homeless and financial difficulty.

Doug and Ben had grown up serving at the Stewpot, a day shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Dallas Texas, where their father, the Rev. Dr. Bruce Buchanan, served as Executive Director. Growing up at the Stewpot, the brothers had made music with and for the clients, including participating in the outreach concerts which included the early forms of the Dallas Street Choir.

Inspired by the work of Jonathan Palant and the Dallas Street Choir, the brothers set out to found a street choir for Baltimore. In November 2016, a Dean's Incentive Grant from the Peabody Conservatory supplied the initial capital to get the project off the ground.
